FAQ

What is coaching?

Life Coaching is helping normal people achieve a better life. People have always sought to live better. Over the last several decades several disciplines have found ways to achieve this. Counselors have found very effective ways to help people overcome major emotional problems. Spiritualists have adopted Eastern spiritual practices. Now Medical scientists can see how these methods affect the brain and the rest of the body.В Several people seeking to help others live better lives studied these methods. They established the field of Life Coaching.

The techniques of Life Coaching can be applied to all aspects of one’s life. Thus life coaches use the techniques with many different sets of clients. Industries have found that coaching their executives increased the executive’s productivity by ten times. Parents find it helpful in raising their kids. I seek to apply it to the lives of people undergoing life transitions resulting from health changes.

How I view coaching

I view coaching like teaching someone to swim. We both know what the client wants to achieve. The coach is there to create a safe and supportive space for the client to grow. I focus on client’s fears and skills. By playing and splashing we enjoy ourselves around water or the issue .Gradually we immerse ourselves in the issue. Then we learn ways to move about, eventually you will enjoy  swimming alone.

This is a question that most of us wonder, but it is especially so for those who work in healthcare. I still consider myself healthy, even though I can no longer do many of the things I once did. When my eyesight failed I had to give up clinical medicine. I learned that people with far less or no eyesight lived full and seemingly normal lives.В I learned how they do it. Armed with those skills I found ways to help in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

I No longer see health as a set of standards. Standards that say you have such and such ability, but as functioning, Functioning in ways similar to your peers. Thus health is relative and varies throughout life. A healthy infant cannot do what an adult does. An elderly person can no longer do what they did in their “Prime”.

What are the Aspects of Health?

I see health as resulting from four parts of our lives physical, mental spiritual and social. Most of us find the physical easy to understand. Mental is also fairly easy to grasp. The Spiritual is harder to understand. I see it as how we relate to the universe and the essence of others. Western Science has no way to describe or measure this. People throughout time have recognized this. Non-western countries experience this more too.

The vitality that results from living in a functioning community becomes all too apparent after hurricane Katrina. The illness I saw in Biloxi in the aftermath of that storm was appalling. In those who came to work and those who lived there developed physical illnesses that we do not see elsewhere. The emotional toll was apparent in the depression and suicide increases. Spiritually many asked, “Where is God?” As help poured in and over time the community came back together. We do not live alone. We are dependent on each other in ways we can hardly fathom.

Why in Joy?

Joy is not its own reward; it does good things for you and your body and mind. Recent neuroscience has shown that joyful or happy people’s brains are different. Brain images of happy people show blood flow is increased in the frontal cortex and diminished in the Amygdala. The frontal cortex is where we do much of or thinking. The amygdala is a part of the brain that sends out stress hormones. These stress hormones increase our blood pressure and decrease our immunity. Thus we see that finding ways to be joyful or happy actually can prevent infections and heart disease (or at least the risks for them).

How did I come to In JOY?

After hurricane Katrina I went several times to Biloxi to help in a medical clinic set up to provide care. I stayed in a church turned into a dormitory for volunteers. The local leaders would ask each evening, “Where did you see the face of God today?” The answer was in the people both local and volunteers who came together to care for each other. “Thus I came to know that we can find ways to be positive in the middle of massive devastation.
